POWER FLOW

with Emmy Faria Proud ✢ 1/2/2024

This is the first studio I’ve walked into, and I wondered if I was in the right place. I was taken aback by how dark it was. I was completely transported. Usually, studios are overlit, and their color schemes are either white or super vibrant. This one was the exact opposite. As soon as I walked into the space, I was transported.

If you couldn’t tell by my website address, I have a deep affinity for the story of the Wizard of Oz. Upon entering, I immediately felt like I had walked into the Emerald City. I felt like I was going to get to see behind the curtain to view who truly was the Wizard. It was captivating.

The space was incredibly designed. It was so earthy, grounding, and dark. I am obsessed with dim lighting and low lighting in my personal space. I was surprised by how sultry this studio was. If you are easily overstimulated, then this is the studio for you. You will have no choice but to unwind. I felt a primordial level of relaxation upon entry.

There were a couple of cute young gals taking photos of themselves in the mirror to post on social media, but they were not loud about it at all. So, if I wanted to, I could have just gone into a pre-practice savasana and enjoyed myself quietly without disturbance. The space was extremely peaceful.

The lights were impressively placed behind architectural features so that it felt like energy rising from the room instead of burning spotlights shining down into your eyes. The surround sound system was hands down the best I’ve ever encountered. I felt like I was inside of the music instead of the music playing above me. The playlist was vibrant when it needed to be and soothing when called for. The all-around atmosphere at this studio is one of the best I’ve experienced.

Emmy was a phenomenal yoga instructor. She pushed me to the limit. I enjoyed the modifications for core work during sporadic moments during the flow. We did hold boat pose and did some plank work, which was dedicated core, but it was dispersed amongst the rest of the flow, which was nice because I never felt my abs max out completely. I was able to give more because it was diversified throughout the practice.

Emmy’s flow was creative: for instance, we did some form of push-up work in dolphin pose that had me burning, which I’d never experienced before. I was excited the entire time and mesmerized by how fast-paced her flow was and how intricate it was. It was so impressive that she was able to memorize such difficult choreography while maintaining such clarity and direction with her cues. She never ever tripped up. It was almost as if she had a script in her mind, and she was able to read from it flawlessly. She never faltered to bring exciting energy, and even though her sequence was so well planned, it did not seem rote whatsoever.

She was also very masterful at prompting intellectual/spiritual cues throughout the practice - not just the deepening, transition, and breathing cues. She would pop up out of nowhere with emotional guidance in the midst of a quick-paced, powerful flow, and I would wonder how she does it. It’s almost like there’s more than one person inside of her guiding her to guide us, and I felt like I was getting a crowd’s worth of instruction from one voice.

I was very grateful for the gorgeously moody and moonlit ambiance coupled with her consistent reminders of positivity. I felt like I was able to absorb more of what she was saying because I wasn't so concentrated on the mirrors surrounding us; they were more of an afterthought since the lights were so low. The high energy of her voice and flow combined with the low soothing vibes of the surroundings were a potent pair. Their juxtaposition was enchanting.

It was such a well-rounded physical sequence filled with such potent motivational mentions. Because the lighting and music were so soothing yet dramatic, it felt very theatrical to practice here. I had a similar feeling to walking away from watching a really good film when I was done with this session.

It was a very special studio, and Emmy was fantastic. Definitely do not miss a chance to practice here.
